Narcolepsy

Thought I could stay awake through LS today. Nope.

Probably could have stayed awake through Physics. Wrong again.

Chem? You'd think so, wouldn't you?

Happy Halloween!

After Halloween is over, I'm so going over to Ralphs to buy a pumpkin... for like 50 cents. Then, seed roasting time, and maybe someone knows how to cook with the pumpkin? Oh well, I just want the seeds.

So here's another crazy thought: When you go bowling, you toss the ball down to the very end of the lane. Whether you hit a strike or gutter, the ball gets returned to where you are in a matter of about 10 seconds. Maybe less. So imagine... how fast must the ball travel in order to get back to you?

So let's say that uniform motion applies. Distance x* is 60 feet, which is the standard length of a lane. Initial velocity is zero. And let t=10 seconds, for the time it takes for the ball to get back. This of course assumes that the ball is traveling only on the horizontal, but we're estimating here anyway.

Simplifying the uniform motion equation gives us:
60ft=.5*a(10sec)^2

and a=1.2ft/s^s

that's freakin fast, yo. Meaning after 10 seconds, the ball travels at a speed of 12 feet per second. Not sure if I can even run that fast. And even that doesn't take into account any vertical direction that the ball has to travel (eg to get up back onto the ball rack from some mysterious place underground)

I swear they have hundreds of midgets constantly running on wheels to keep a conveyor belt moving.

Don't people realize that "Hey, want to go out for coffee?" is our generation's way of asking someone out on a date? To me, it seems like it's just beating around the bush too much. Maybe.

Oh so fucked up

No, I’m not drunk. It’s 8:07 in the morning, what are you nuts? Although, I’ve always wondered if this is how it feels. Well, I’ve been up for close to 24 hours now. No naps, nothing. My brain stopped working about 8 hours ago. I can’t remember what happened yesterday. Or I can, but it seems like a distant memory.

Got out of work at 7:17 am. Walking back toward the apartment, the line for the 7:30 sale was starting to build up, and it was 7:23. I thought, what the hell, why not. So I stood in line, and watched the crowd of women storm the bargain tables. Holy crap. That’s all I have to say about that.

Made it out alive. If you could call it that. I might go back later today to pick up one of those leather portfolio thingies. Or wait until the 33% employee thing. Either way, when I get up, I’ll be feeling a lot more tired than I am right now. Should I just not sleep then?

I think I’ll delete this post after I regain my sanity. Or… if. It also might be fun to save… just to see what david is like when he is completely out of his mind.

One more thing… walking back up the hill to head home, I noticed a larger than normal number of people wearing their UCLA sweatshirts. That’s fine and all, but it’s got me thinking. If you can call it thinking. With so much choice as to what clothing to wear, we all tend toward the same items. Like sheep. Those grey UCLA sweatshirts…seriously, of all the people I passed coming back, a fourth of them were wearing their ucla sweatshirts.

Getting progressively more tired as I get closer in proximity to the bed. Sleepiness is a power function with respect to R, R being the absolute value of the distance between you and the bed. But can R be negative? I dunno. Unless R is a vector. But that would mean that Sleepiness is a vector. Yes, sleepiness is indeed a vector. And it’s pointing toward my bed. Mmmm, bed….

From the massive crowd of little women (who were mighty pushy and shove-y), I managed to grab two sweatshirts. Too tired to care what they look like, as long as they don’t have shit like “Bruin Mom” plastered all over it. I think it’s one of those deals where you gotta grab a shitload of shirts, take them to a corner, then fish them in a pond. Hey, look, green!

Oh god, there’s an earthquake. No, I think that really was an earthquake. National Geological Website Thingy… Go! Tell me that I’m not hallucinating

Wait… go back up two or three lines. Fish them in a pond? I actually typed that…. What the?! Wow… what I meant to say was that you gotta take them to a corner and sort through them.

Never no not ever.

Searching for cartharsis

I wonder how we get from the cute little kids that we used to be.... to the partiers, the workaholics, the drunks that we are today. Straying isn't the word, because everyone goes off into different directions anyway; but it's close. I have this random memory of someone back in the 8th grade telling me to stay the same person that I was. I wish a lot of people are the people they were back in 8th grade. That is, without the awkward teenage angst. And tremendous fear of girls. Although that last one is still partially true.

Yet another pointless post, huh? Least this one isn't stuck in draft mode like all the other ones are.

So uhhhhh....
Cake or death? What about death by cake? Death by this cake?

Oh...we're all out of cake. Sorry.

Either the cutest baby squirrel you've ever seen... or the creepiest.

Just before the end of last school year, the squirrels were runnin' around all fat and plump from their feasting on students' trash. Sadly enough, with the summer departure of what seemed like 75% of campus, the squirrel population was left with nothing to feed on but the anticipation of when students would once again return. With food. Over the next few months, the poor things thinned out like crazy.

They began to look normal, lean... like healthy squirrels should, not all lethargic and... well... like garbage dwelling derelicts.

Sad thing to say is, now that the campus is returning to life, so are the squirrels returning to their vulturely ways. Last week while walking to class, one of 'em was eating a Baby Ruth bar. A candy bar! It seemed very careful in removing the wrapper before it gorged into the chocolate-peanut treasure within. I'd say that people need to throw away their trash before the squirrels get to it, but when the squirrels have adapted well enough to retrieve food remnants from the bottom of trash cans, what more can we do? Squirrel proof trash cans? Start hunting them for sport? for dinner?

Over the years

First, another installment of "Random question of the day"
How many sesame seeds must the sesame oil company squeeze to fill up one bottle of sesame oil?

Sometimes I wonder if, back in the day, I'd have ever imagined myself being where I am today. "Fuck no," I'd have probably replied. I guess I swore a lot back then...

Long overdue

*Note: I do anticipate this post becoming extremely long. I'll be posting in multiple stages, editing and adding on to the end rather than splitting the post into parts 1, 2, 3. So read on, but be aware that there may be more to come.

Now that the summer is over, it’s about time to recap the things that have happened. There’s still a sort of ambivalence that lingers – yes, the summer actually felt pretty long, almost just about right, though I do wish that I had an extra week to settle in and be able to say hi to everyone again without feeling rushed to get back into the swing of classes. Bleh, maybe I do need a kick in the butt to get back into gear. I may have been getting dumber and dumber. Now, time to search for that book… the one with… all of them words what goes into the Engrish language… “dictionary”, is what I reckons they calls it. I don’t know where I dones put it. Ah, heres it be.

Ahem…

Summer School, Session A – June 27th to August 5th:
With the help of a little Timesuck and a guy named Karl, session A wasn’t too bad at all. Between the studying away from the apartment and spending all of that time at Jenn’s place, I managed to completely avoid the apartment (and those damn fleas that the cat left behind), sleeping excluded, of course. Biochem 153A and Writing 100W both turned out to be among the top 5 classes I’ve taken thus far at UCLA. If you’re wondering, Karl is a guy in my 153 class whom I met in discussion. That guy did some hardcore studying, and kicked my ass into gear to get my studying done as well. Seriously, if not for him, I would have done miserably in that class. The writing class was interesting, definitely the smallest class (and the smallest room) I’ve seen. The topic of the class was health and wellness, so of course it doesn’t hurt to have an interest in the health sciences. Most of the readings were fairly interesting, albeit repetitive. ::hypnotically:: "Yes, I now realize the importance of a holistic approach to the notion of health." Not that I didn't know that before.
